Captain Gary Michael Rose was awarded the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary heroism during Operation Tailwind, a top-secret mission conducted in Laos from September 11–14, 1970. Rose, a Green Beret medic, risked his life under heavy machine-gun fire to treat more than 60 wounded soldiers, despite being seriously injured himself. His actions were recognized with the Distinguished Service Cross initially, but the mission’s classified nature led to the full extent of his actions remaining unknown for decades. After the mission was declassified, efforts were made to upgrade his award. Nearly half a century later, Rose was formally recognized with the nation’s highest military honor.
