According to his gravestone inscription at Wheaton Cemetery, Murray enlisted at Fort Sheridan in 1917 and was a member of the 149th Field Artillery. Murray saw action in France and died at Bulson, Sedan, France, on the morning of November 11, 1918, just hours before the armistice ended the war. Originally buried in France, his remains were returned to his hometown in 1922. His photo is preserved by the Chicago History Museum’s file of photographs of Chicago-area men who died in World War I.
