MAY 15, 1870 FIVE CAVALRY MEN OF COMPANY C, LEONARD, CANFIELD, HIMMELSBACH, HUBBARD AND THOMPSON ENGAGED FIFTY INDIANS IN A TWO HOUR SKIRMISH AND DROVE THEM OFF. WHEN A REPORT OF THIS REACHED SECRETARY OF WAR WILLIAM W. BELKNAP, HE ORDERED MEDALS OF HONOR PRESENTED TO ALL FIVE MEN. THIS BRIEF ENGAGEMENT PRODUCED MORE MEDALS OF HONOR THAN ANY OTHER INCIDENT IN NEBRASKA’S MILITARY HISTORY.
