Anthony Lubiewski, a Polish American whose name is inscribed in the “Soldiers” section of this memorial, appears to have used the name Tony Lubeck during his service in the U.S. Army. According to a June 29, 1918, article in the Chicago Tribune about his death, Pvt. Lubeck was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions during battle in Catigny, France, on May 28, 1918. During the fight, he went on a mission to stop an enemy sniper who shooting down American forces. Lubeck was killed shortly after carrying out this mission, the paper said. Lubiewski is buried in Somme American Cemetery. The Tribune said his home address was 1218 N. Cleaver in the historically Polish West Town neighborhood of Chicago, about 10 miles southeast of this cemetery.
