Guardians of Freedom Memorial at the entrance to the New York State Thruway in Herkimer.The memorial was the brain child of Herkimer County Legislator John Brezinski. The memorial is dedicated to honor military K-9s and their handlers. The statue depicts United States Marine Corps Sgt. Adam Cann and his dog Bruno. On January 5, 2006 while on patrol in Afghanistan Bruno detected explosives on a suicide bomber, alerting Sgt. Cann just as they were detonated. Sgt. Cann sacrificed his life, to save his fellow soldiers, and innocent civilians standing nearby.
