GILL TORPEDOED AND SUNK OFF CAPE FEAR BY THE GERMAN SUBMARINE U-158 MARCH 12, 1942. THE CITIZENS OF SOUTHPORT CARED FOR THE SURVIVORS AND MOURNED FOR THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES.
