Harwood was close to 60 years old when he volunteered for World War I in 1917. According to a January 1918 Chicago Tribune article about his death, Harwood was originally rejected for a hospital unit because of his age, but later accepted because of his expertise with X-rays. He was promoted to captain in France. He died on January 4, 1918, of pneumonia. He is buried in Somme American Cemetery in France.
