COXSWAIN JOHN HAYES SERVED ON THE USS KEARSARGE. IT SUNK THE NOTORIOUS CONFEDERATE RAIDER ALABAMA ON JUNE 19, 1864 OFF CHERBOURG, FRANCE. HAYES WAS A GUNNER AND WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN FIRING THE CANNON THAT SUNK THE ALABAMA.
