IN 1795 A CANNON BATTERY CONSTRUCTED ON POINT PETER PENINSULA BECAME THE FIRST SYSTEM OF U.S. COASTAL DEFENSES. DURING THE WAR OF 1812 A BRITISH FORCE OVERWHELMED 116 U.S. REGULARS, DESTROYING THE FORT.
